Financial Modeling at Macro Hedge Fund?

My friend just went for an interview at one of the most established macro fund in Asia, he flunked it because they are looking for guys with lots of experience in financial modeling and statistical modeling, however according to my understanding this fund is not a quant fund but a discretionary trading style that mostly trade currencies, can someone enlighten me what kind of financial modeling and statistical modeling skill are needed for macro hedge fund?

Check your PM - this particular fund does things differently so don't expect to perform both financial and high-level statistical modelling. That said, I think there are very few out there who can do macro, financial modelling and statistical research simultaneously, much less right out of school, so having those skills will enable you to stand out.
