Get into hedge fund in US - through MBA or ?

Hi guys, first time writing here. I need some advice on my career path. I'm not a US citizen nor have I lived there, but I would really like to work at hedge fund based in the US.

My background:

- Undergrad at one of top unis (considered, by most, to be #1 in the country) with 4.0 equivalent GPA. On a global level, it is ranked similar to NYU.

- Got right into tier 1 L/S HF here. Worked for 2 years and switched to corporate stategy/finance role at Fintech. Got promoted once.

- Earned CFA whilst working at Fintech.

- I took GRE more than five years ago and got 337. If I take GMAT I expect to get 750+, if I prepare as I usually do for tests like this. Not so worried about this.

I got an offer from UK-based HF once but got cancelled due to COVID. They needed to sponsor me.

I read that MBA is not a great path towards buyside, but for me it seems like it's one of few, if not only, way to get into HF in USA. I need to get Visa and since I am not from Singapore, Canada or any other country that has edge when it comes to Visa, I need to rely on OPT or Sponsors. I don't think networking my way in is viable either. I tried doing it on Linkedin to no avail.

Do you guys have any advice for me? Do you see a lot of internationals at work? I would really really appreciate it.

P.s. Just for clarification I am not Indian or Chinese - just mentioning it since a lot of internationals appear to be from these countries.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for your situation:

Background and Current Situation:

  • Undergrad: Top university with a 4.0 GPA, globally ranked similar to NYU.
  • Work Experience: 2 years at a tier 1 L/S hedge fund, followed by a corporate strategy/finance role at a fintech company with a promotion.
  • Certifications: Earned CFA.
  • Test Scores: GRE score of 337, potential GMAT score of 750+.
  • Visa Challenges: Need OPT or sponsorship to work in the US.

Key Points to Consider:

  1. MBA as a Pathway:

    • While it's true that an MBA is not always the most direct route to the buyside, it can be a viable option for international candidates needing a visa.
    • An MBA from a top US business school can provide you with the OPT (Optional Practical Training) period, which allows you to work in the US for up to 3 years if you are in a STEM program.
    • Top MBA programs also have strong networks and career services that can help you secure internships and full-time positions in hedge funds.
  2. Visa Sponsorship:

    • Many hedge funds and financial institutions in the US do sponsor H-1B visas, but it can be competitive.
    • It's crucial to target firms known for sponsoring international candidates. Networking and reaching out to recruiters directly can provide more accurate and up-to-date information on their visa policies.
  3. Networking:

    • Although you mentioned that LinkedIn networking hasn't been fruitful, consider other networking avenues such as alumni networks, industry conferences, and professional associations.
    • Engaging in forums like WSO and attending events hosted by business schools or financial institutions can also help you build connections.
  4. Alternative Routes:

    • Consider applying directly to hedge funds that have a history of hiring international candidates.
    • Look into specialized finance programs or certifications in the US that might offer OPT and can serve as a stepping stone to your desired role.

Actionable Steps:

  • Research MBA Programs: Focus on top-tier US business schools with strong finance programs and good placement records in hedge funds.
  • Prepare for GMAT: Given your strong test-taking skills, aim for a high GMAT score to strengthen your MBA application.
  • Leverage Alumni Networks: Reach out to alumni from your undergrad and CFA networks who are working in the US hedge fund industry.
  • Direct Applications: Apply to hedge funds and financial institutions that are known for sponsoring visas.
  • Professional Associations: Join and actively participate in professional associations related to finance and hedge funds.

Conclusion:

Pursuing an MBA from a top US business school can be a strategic move to gain access to the US job market and secure a visa. Additionally, leveraging your existing networks and exploring direct application routes can increase your chances of landing a role in a US-based hedge fund.

Good luck with your career path!
