How to explain leaving a fund

In hedge fund interviews, how do you explain why you left the prior hedge fund?

I feel like both answers (quit and terminated) can be the wrong answer. Quit - not resilient, not loyal, not passionate even if you say comp wasn’t good or bad culture. Terminated - poor performance or poor fit or done something unethical

What’s the best way to frame departure?

When explaining your departure from a hedge fund during interviews, the key is to frame your answer positively and professionally while avoiding unnecessary details that could raise red flags. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some strategies:

  1. Keep it Concise and Positive:

    • Use a professional, canned response like, "Ultimately, I decided that the firm wasn't the right fit for me." This keeps the explanation neutral and avoids diving into potentially negative details.
  2. Focus on Growth and Alignment:

    • Highlight how the new opportunity aligns better with your career goals. For example, "I was looking for a role where I could contribute more meaningfully to investment decisions and grow my skill set in a specific area, which I believe this role offers."
  3. Avoid Blaming or Criticizing:

    • Do not badmouth your previous employer or team. Instead, focus on what you learned and how it prepared you for the next step.
  4. Spin Termination Positively (if applicable):

    • If you were terminated, frame it as a learning experience. For instance, "I learned a lot during my time there, but unfortunately, the firm decided to go in a different direction. I’ve taken the opportunity to reflect and grow from the experience."
  5. Be Prepared for Follow-ups:

    • If pressed for more details, keep your tone professional and steer the conversation back to your skills and how you can add value to the new role.
  6. Tailor Your Story to the Audience:

    • If speaking to senior PMs or traders, they may be more understanding of challenges in the industry. You can briefly acknowledge the realities of the role without over-explaining.

Remember, the goal is to convey that you’re focused on the future and excited about the opportunity at hand, rather than dwelling on the past.
