How well is Voleon regarded?

I recently learned of Voleon in Berkeley. They were created by 2 ex DE Shaw guys around 2009 ish I believe.

Not much info is available on them. How well are they regarded? Are they in the tier 1 list of shops like 2S, Cit, HRT, JS, Shaw, etc.... or more so in tier 2 with shops like Akuna, Squarepoint, etc..?

From what I've heard they have never been above sharpe 1, and AUM is now in the low hundred millions.

My understanding is that they have two funds - the one they primarily market to institutional investors (this is still large I believe, like $5Bn - again anecdotal, but I heard most of the capital is from foreign sources and is very sticky), and then the smaller fund which is where I heard most of the capital decline was. I believe this smaller one has only ~300MM in it now.

Again this is all word of mouth.

I'm new to finance and have a vague understanding of finance, but have a somewhat basic understanding of sharpe ratio.

Where do the other team stand in type of what sharpe ratios they've hit?

I'm not sure I understand the question - are you asking for how sharpe 1 compares to other funds performance?
