Is anyone from Europe?
Hello everyone, I'm studying Engineering in Europe but I don't really enjoy it. I love everything about markets and trading so I want to do a Master in something like Financial Engineering because I really want to work in a Hedge Fund in Europe but I don't know which country I should go for. Any ideas?
There are plenty of EU users on here, let's hope they'll find this thread and chime in. I did something similar, first Engineering degree and then a M. Sc. in Finance, it got me an IB gig even though I had no internships.
Ideally you would aim for the country you want to work in afterwards (would make things easier but - assuming the EU will last until you graduate - it shouldn't be an obstacle if you don't). Good BB jobs should be available in key European regions like UK, DE, NL, FR, CH, BE. Which languages do you speak fluently?

In that case you could brush up your French and then open up FR, BE, LUX and CH as employment markets as well. Monaco is probably too small for large-scale jobs, but private banking/wealth management roles are there. Even Quebec/Montreal/Canada is a great option with French language skills (just mentioning it as an alternative to Europe).
With a really good skill set you don't necessarily need to have the language for a EU job though, but it helps with networking/socializing and the rest. If you want to stick to English speaking countries - London is waiting for you. Doesn't get much better for all kinds of finance jobs (I had the larger part of my career with Engineering/M Sc. Finance in London).
Some questions: 1. Do you think Brexit will affect EU students? Will i be able to find a job (or at least an internship at a HF) when i finish my Master in UK? Besides, i can study for free inside EU :) 2. I know that there are a lot assets under management in LUX and CH but im not sure if any trading happens there.

If you are in the UK and like it there - I'd stay put. Chances are high that non-UK EU citizens will no longer be allowed to work in the UK after March 19, unless they have something in writing, some visa applied for or some guarantee from their employer (ie sponsorship or similar). Nobody knows exactly what will happen, but after March 19 EU citizens will most likely need some kind of visa to work there. Many recruiters in London already ask candidates whether they are British passport holders or not. (there might be an opportunity for an "new/accelerated indefinite leave to remains" for current EU citizens who have residency in the UK, but who knows?)
Since you are not fluent in any other EU languages and since you are mentioning Brexit, I am assuming you are neither UK nor a EU citizen? If that is the case you would need sponsorship to work/live in UK/EU countries anyway. If you hold a EU citizenship but don't speak the local language (ie German in Germany, Swedish in Sweden, etc) you might have a tricky situation. These are all assumptions from my end, so apologies if I am wrong.
Hey, a friend of mine works for the UK gov and sent through a few documents and links. I wanted to highlight the recent development re: Brexit and how EU citizens can protect their rights while the nation is withdrawing from the union.
Apparently it is all going to be relatively easy for EU citizens residing with legal status in the UK and doesn't look to restrictive at all for law-abiding residents. There is/will be an app to be downloaded onto your mobile phone, you can enter your details on the app, scan the chip in your EU passport with your phone and take a "selfie". After paying the (low) fee you should be receiving something in your mailbox a few days/weeks afterwards that would give you a "settled status". Sounds pretty amazing. (afaik they'll use HMRC, other tax and gov databases to check the details and length of residency)

looks like london for you with your background. Some trading in CH , much more than LUX but the center of action is in London. Brexit will have a major impact but far too early to tell exactly what it is. There should be a lot more clarity in Q1 2019.
Yes UK is the best place to be atm, but im not going for a Master yet. Im in the 2nd year of Electrical Engineering. So, right now, which is the second best country in EU to be as a quant? France, Belgium, Switzerland or maybe Netherlands? Im not talking about salary. Im talking about the career prospects...

The French are big on quant asset management, both in LO and hedge. Lots of systematics/CTAs/quant equity with good AUM.
