Is ER to SM HF Impossible?
Ok, obviously its not impossible, but everyone on this forum suggests one way or another that its either IB or nothing. I have scanned several notable SM HF employees on LinkedIn, and only a minority of them have previous IB experience.
Can a pro-ER intellectual please reassure me that my HF dreams can still be fulfilled if I go into BB ER first?
Of course, especially in Europe
Of course it’s impossible?
Of course possible. Countless colleagues that came from ER. Really don't know where this IB thinking came from
Top/tiger cub types probably not
There is a world outside these 10ish funds you mention.
I had no idea
Stick to sector focused funds and you'll be fine
Ok cool! Which sectors do you think would be most applicable? For example, I know one SM HF is TMT only. A better question would be which sectors are SM HFs usually NOT interested in?
Every sector has plenty of SM that are dedicated to it. For example Wexford does a lot of energy, Tiger does a lot of TMT, Longpond does a lot of REITs etc etc
Went to a L/S straight after LO first experience. Based in Europe. Got the feeling that they don't look specifically for ER/IB/AM experience unless you're talking about activist (I got an interview with small activist once but they preferred someone coming from PE/ mgmt consulting).
In the past I found many openings for sector specialists, so ER helps you in building more specific knowledge in that sense.
Are there any sectors in your experience that you’ve noticed SM HFs typically aren’t interested in?
