Lateraling to Corporate/IR and pay
Pod analyst I know abruptly moved to IR for a mid cap company that we both cover. He claims it’s high six/low 7 all in comp including stock comp. Is this the norm? Seems like very good pay for a lower stress lifestyle. More and more IRs are former analysts so maybe something to it.
Not at all. Would say this is a fair progression. Unless he is very senior (doubtful being a random pod analyst) then that comp sounds very high. You definitely can get to that range but that is the range a senior MD at BB who is heading to a megacap to lead IR gets
Manager - $150k-250k
Director $200k-$350k
VP $300k-500k
SVP $500k-$1M+
He's probably doing something funky with the stock comp (e.g., got a total stock grant of $500K upfront but counting it as part of his Y1 comp, etc.)
Thats what i thought or some sort of extremely fortuitous mental math.
i.e. “If the stock price triples as I expect it will it will be worth $500k per year for 4 years when it fully vests”
That's probably the thought path that led to him not sticking around at a pod.
These ranges are for corporate IR not buy-side, correct?
This has to be cap. I worked closely with an IR function at a large cap tech company (not FAANG but in the same ballpark) before moving to higher finance and the IR function was not getting close to this. Unless he’s now a VP it seems super unlikely. Is this a more specific division / role than just broadly “corporate IR”?
I’m referencing a corporate gig at a $5-10B software co. Maybe there are other responsibilities but in any case that’s good comp if close to accurate.
I’m very skeptical. There’s a big difference between buyside IR and corporate IR. One generates revenue and one is a glorified PR role. You can make some serious cash fundraising for a fund, but corporate IR is so far removed from actually driving the bottom line.
This isn't too far off. Stock comp for Head of IR (VP level) at public software cos w/ 1-5bn market cap is around 300-350k base + 20-35% bonus + 1m-2m equity grant vests over 4 yrs, and then tack on a refresher that become (1/4*initial equity grant) vested over 4 years.
You just need to find a firm without a strong CFO ie some of the beat down $1-2bn software cos -- in these cases the CEO / VC board members will greenlight you through process.
This example is specific to certain software co in that range.
these look like zirp numbers; market feels like it's come in since with SS/DD
This is true for HCOL in small cap tech
No clue what comp is like in corp IR, but noticed in my coverage more IR folks are former buyside. Especially in SMID cap, when the company wants more eyes on their stock, they have hired new IR who can speak in buyside jargon. If the company has lofty growth strat or is "misunderstood", wouldnt be surprised if they gave him above market package
Got another anecdote from someone trustworthy: all in comp of $700-800k with about $450k in cash and rest sbc. This guy is IR and Treasurer. Quite good
