Law practices for special situations
I’m just starting out in big law and will most likely do M&A, structured finance and derivatives (eq & credit). Other than bankruptcy, are there any bodies of legal knowledge that would be useful and/or attractive (in recruiting) for a future transition to special situations?
I’m trying to get a feel for areas of finance that would allow me to leverage my legal experience and welcome suggestions or ideas other than special sits.
Thanks in advance.
Levfin / credit is useful since you get a handle on credit agreements. Activism defense / raid defense / contested m&a groups are decent if you are interested in merger arb type strategies, though often housed in M&A.
You would be surprised at the mix of lawyers who end up in distressed / special situations seats at hedge funds. There is alot more M&A representation than you would think, though maybe due to type of people who go to M&A.
Sorry, for clarity, do you mean a lot of M&A lawyers who end up in distressed/SS or a lot of M&A bankers who end up in distressed/SS?
M&A lawyers.
M&A, Antitrust or restructuring.
