Learning About A Sector

I’m currently a freshman at a target business program and my goal is to get an analyst position out of undergrad. I know this is extremely difficult to say the least, however I’d heard that I can make myself a more attractive candidate by becoming specialized in a specific sector. Does anyone have any advice regarding this? As in what are the possible sectors, will this even help, and are there some that are better than others?

Also if anyone has any general advice about getting a HF analyst position out of undergrad that would be much appreciated.

Personally, I would not focus on a specific sector. The chances of you getting to a firm you want and them having that seat open is very low. Also, a lot of times when you apply to roles out of undergrad you apply broadly to the group or team then get placed into a sector.

I think a much better use of time would be 1. Getting the best grades you can 2. creating a list of firms you are interested in and then looking up alumni via LinkedIn. Send emails out and network as much as you can, knowledge is a big part of getting roles like this but so is networking.
