Learning Investing Lingo

This is going to sound very ignorant, but I really want to become more comfortable with using investing phrases and lingo (eg. "margin realization opportunity" "unit growth story" "undemanding multiple" etc. I'm pulling really random examples). Are there specific books or publicly available pitches/investment research (I also have access to some ER) I can read to become more accustomed to reading and using this lingo? Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some recommendations to get more comfortable with investing phrases and lingo:

  1. Books:

    • "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham: This classic book is often recommended for understanding fundamental investing concepts and terminology.
    • Books by Ray Dalio: His works provide insights into macroeconomic principles and investment strategies, which can help you understand and use investing lingo effectively.
  2. Publicly Available Pitches/Investment Research:

    • Equity Research Reports: Since you have access to some equity research (ER), make sure to read these reports regularly. They are a great source of industry-specific terminology and investment phrases.
    • Seeking Alpha: This platform offers a wealth of articles and analysis on various stocks and investment strategies, which can help you get familiar with the lingo used by professionals.
  3. Additional Resources:

    • WSO Forum: Engage with discussions on the Wall Street Oasis forum. Reading through threads and participating in discussions can help you pick up the lingo used by other finance professionals.
    • Fortune and Forbes: Regularly reading articles from these sources can also help you become more familiar with investing terminology.

Remember, the key is to read as much as you can and absorb the language used in these resources. Ask questions and be curious to deepen your understanding.

You just gotta keep reading, absorbing info in conversation and applying similar concepts from situations you saw that were a “unit growth story” to others you believe have the same deltas. Obviously no cheat sheet out there for this type of thing but more importantly your lingo won’t hold you back in an interview setting or whatever — if anything, ability to describe a situation in plain vernacular english is more important. But if you use a term incorrectly, your interviewer will think you are a moron. Good lingo =\= good investment ideas or even communication of a good investment idea.
