Leaving Real Estate Finance (REPE) for Long Only AM / Hedge Fund

Hi guys. I am a long time lurker who used this site to help me land an IB role and then a RE Dev and REPE role. I have 7 years of high finance experience (2 yr LMM IB, 1 YR RE development, 1 yr RE appraisal, and then 3 years REPE due diligence monkey) and am pretty burnt out of real estate. The deals are the same every time no matter the asset class. I actually left my real estate role in January to take some time off and figure out what is next.

I'm very interested in macroeconomics and think a research role or front office AM would be an awesome switch. My question is, what do I need to do to get into an AM or hedge fund role? What programs would work for someone like me? I am willing to go back to school but think that my current joblessness will hurt me in this area. I'm open to any thoughts here.
