L/S Equity Career London
Hi everyone, this is my first post here.
My situation: currently doing an audit internship before i start my studies at a top university in continental europe in september (think HEC, HSG, Bocconi)
i'm really passionate about equity investing, so i like to do some equity research in my free time and I try to learn some important lessons by investing my own money. For my personal investments, I like to write a research report which also consists of a finacial model (detailed, whole report is usually between 10 - 15 pages)
Q: does it make sense to start publishing those reports to get interviews at HFs? Does it show passion for finance or will it hurt my chances bc maybe they are not good enough? Long term goal is to work at a MM HF ( i know they don't invest the same way I do, they try to predict quarters etc.//but it shows that I can build models and understand how a business makes money/what the important drivers are)
Also, how possible is it to land a HF gig out of undergrad? I know about P72 Academy and CAP, also hear Millennium has a programm for undergrads. Are those realistic options or should i focus on the "classical way" via IB?
Thanks to everyone that takes time to answer
Hey, on one of the programs you mentioned. Would say collectively they hire maybe 10-15 kids in london so don’t overly focus on them. Target IB and ER too…and frankly I’m not sure I’d be pursuing the same stuff if I was to do university again in 2027.
Keep writing and building models but aim to make your theses significantly more concise (like 3 pages max). Good luck
Thanks for the reply :)
But do you think it can help me or is it more likely to hurt me if I start posting my research? I assume it depends on how good it is...
"and frankly I’m not sure I’d be pursuing the same stuff if I was to do university again in 2027"
Can you elaborate on this? disruption by ai?
It won’t hurt, but it won’t massively help you either. So don’t spent time doing long write ups. Better to have a coverage you track and produce short mini pitches you can send people or talk about in interviews.
I moreso meant I’d probably do something in the startup space…who knows what the junior L/S equity grind will look like when you graduate. The opportunity set may just be fundamentally different, not to say you shouldn’t pursue it
I have a couple more questions... if you wouldn't mind answering them, could you send me a pm? I can't send you one
Either way, thanks for your input!
