l/s pod analysts, do you code much?

Is there any value to learning python + sql still? Or has claude made it obsolete?

I'm curious if the data you are using for your models is clean or siloed/unstructured (in which case claude prob cannot help you pull it)

Based on the most helpful WSO content, learning Python and SQL still holds significant value, even in the era of advanced AI tools like Claude. Here's why:

  1. Data Retrieval and Organization: SQL remains the primary method for harvesting data from databases. It allows you to retrieve specific data points, such as trades of a particular security or companies meeting certain criteria. This is crucial for building models, especially when dealing with structured data.

  2. Data Analysis and Manipulation: While SQL is excellent for retrieving and organizing data, Python shines in analyzing and manipulating it. With libraries like Pandas, Python enables you to work with data in more complex ways, such as backtesting strategies or running scenarios efficiently.

  3. Unstructured or Siloed Data: If the data you're working with is unstructured or siloed, tools like Claude may struggle to pull and process it effectively. In such cases, having the ability to write scripts in Python or SQL to clean, structure, and analyze the data becomes invaluable.

  4. Flexibility and Efficiency: Python is highly flexible and allows for quick prototyping and drafting of solutions. While it may not be as robust as some other languages for advanced use cases, its ease of use and extensive libraries make it a go-to tool for many finance professionals.

  5. Long-Term Career Benefits: Even if AI tools like Claude can assist with certain tasks, understanding the underlying processes and being able to code provides a deeper level of control and insight. It also makes you more self-reliant and adaptable to various data challenges.

In summary, Python and SQL are far from obsolete. They complement AI tools by enabling you to handle data more effectively, especially when it's messy or unstructured. Plus, they enhance your efficiency and problem-solving capabilities, which are critical in roles like L/S pod analysts.
