No summer offer yet - how to land a summer gig during the outbreak?

Any advice on networking to get a summer gig this summer during these times?

Perhaps along the lines of:

  1. Any type of firms I should focus on? I'd imagine some HF strategies are hit worse than others.
  2. Should I wait for 2-3 weeks until things calm down before sending out cold emails?

Here is my background for context:

I got interested in finance late into my studies. I applied to basically all finance internships in my area, went to 4-5 final rounds (BB, AM, HF and family offices) but blew them up, probably because I did not know my technicals.

  • International student studying at 1st world Asian country (think HK, SG, JP)
  • Junior year, double majoring in Mathematics and Physics, second-upper class GPA (didn't know better to study for a high GPA)
  • Previous internships: Actuarial role at Insurance, Actuarial role at Reinsurance, Data Science role at a Tech startup, Market Risk role at a Commercial Bank
  • No summer gig yet

My plan now:

  • Study technicals as much as possible (completed Bloomberg certificate, messing around in Quantopian, learning how to make stock pitches)
  • Network to get HF internships this summer (unpaid?).
  • Get an off-cycle on my last semester in spring 2021 (need to do 6 months attachment to complete my degree)
  • MAYBE delay graduation and do off-cycle internships at my home country (BRIC)

Also, a resume review would be most appreciated, please just destroy my resume (will PM).

Would be great to know what everyone thinks of my plan too (feasible? any better way to do it?)

LOL 1st world Asian countries... math physics... if you are that smart and arrogant, u can’t get the technicals right? Be humble might help ur interview

I am merely providing context here and try to be detailed because I think they might be relevant. Surely there is some differences in recruitment in HK/SG and, say, Bangkok? Surely there is also a difference between having a background in finance, non-finance quantmajor, and non-finance non-quant major?
