Opportunity at a European MM

Hey guys,

Just got an offer to join a good MM HF as an analyst in continental Europe. I've read a lot on MMs and many describe the culture as cut throat. In this fund, the main strategy is L/S market neutral with a long only fund that is half the AUMs of the market neutral strategy.

My questions are:

  • Given the low job stability, how easy is it to switch to an SM afterwards?
  • Given that I come from IB, would it be easy to go back if things don't go well?
  • Is this a good opportunity overall that I should jump on? I reckon that an opportunity like this won't present itself as I was told I will be trained by the PM for 2 years before getting a book if things go well.

Thanks to all you guys for making this forum a great place to learn and ask questions!

Whatever anyone tells you here, it should matter 10x more:

1) your own thoughts/feelings on the PM/boss you'd be reporting to.

2) Speak to as many people as possible that have worked with that PM: former analysts, sell side people, recruiters, even whatever trader executes for him. Get on linkedin, find some leads and pursue them. What is it like working for him, is he competent, etc. And no, no one should think you're being agressive, but rather you're a thoughtful guy weighing an important decision.
