I have a friend on that team, from what i've heard the hours kinda suck and being that its more supply chain focused it might not translate as broadly to a legit HF seat

Like above said, it's more supply chain focused. Research role that supports the actual HF guys. No path to an actual HF seat at the fund and not going to position you to laterally recruit for one either.

They're not that good - after the whole SAC-insider trading debacle there's emphasis on layering/seperating the investment teams from direct channel checking. The restriction Canvas is put on (e.g. not being able to speak to anyone who's ever worked at a public company for the past 12 months) means that in reality you're better off doing your own calls to get more recent insights - once compliance has taken 3 weeks to approve your call.

Helps sometimes if you're initiating a new vertical and want some data cuts. In reality that data is rather commoditized anyway as it's published by most houses.

Once asked them to cut data in a different way and took 4 weeks to get back to me. By then the opportunity was gone and I had forgotten about it. Guess it looks good for LPs "Yeah uhm we got the academy, our own channel checking, ventures arm, AI fund and two distinct risk management teams".

Haven't seen Canvas to pod seat transfers, but seen data guys to pod seats, and expert network to research analyst switches. Quite rare so I'd deem it to be one offs but not impossible.

From my experience, a HF seat seems like an upward climb. You don't work on any companies or crunch the numbers. It seems like VC is a more likely transition since you are focusing more on learning an industry top-to-bottom.

Terrible comp package. I was offered a verbal offer and the hiring & HR team were spooked by my counter-offer. They then tried to low-ball me to the lowest of the salary range in hopes that I will accept it.
