Post Final Round Response

Recently did a final round at a fund I'm super interested in - did a bunch of interviews, case/met team etc. and was told I had a strong case by the hiring team. I followed up with BD a week after the final round, and instead of being rejected/given an offer, I was asked if I had other offers/timelines they need to be aware of. Was told explicitly that they're interested in me but won't be able to get me an answer until the middle of next month.

I'm not sure how to read this.. is it just a polite rejection, or should I still have hope?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  • Interest Shown: The hiring team explicitly mentioned they are interested in you, which is a positive sign.
  • Timeline Inquiry: Asking about other offers or timelines indicates they are considering you seriously and want to gauge their urgency in making a decision.
  • Delayed Response: The delay until the middle of next month could be due to internal processes, budget approvals, or other administrative reasons.

Interpretation: - Not a Rejection: This is not a polite rejection. If they were not interested, they would likely have communicated a rejection directly. - Maintain Hope: Given their expressed interest and the inquiry about other offers, you should remain hopeful. It suggests they are trying to align their decision-making process with your availability and other potential offers.

Next Steps: - Follow-Up: Continue to follow up politely and keep them updated on any changes in your situation or other offers you might receive. - Patience: Be patient and use this time to prepare for any potential next steps or further interviews.

Keep grinding and stay positive!

Quite typical. If you don’t have outstanding offers - and they don’t have urgent requirement - then makes sense for them to keep you around and keep other candidates in the process until they make up their mind .. unless you have another offer then not much leverage you can apply to speed things up unfortunately.

Or it could be something internal which has nothing to do with you specifically

If they like you, and others, but they decide to go with someone else, then you often wont get a rejection before other candidate has accepted (as they are keeping you as backup).

These things can take months - wouldn’t worry about 3-4 week stall

That’s not necessarily negative - ie they are doing their due diligence. They won’t make an offer right away to first few people they speak to without a good sample size. So even if you’re currently their best choice, they want to make sure. If they want to know if you get other offers, for instance, there’s a reason
