Product manager roles in a hedge fund (or any buy side firms)

Hi everyone,

I’ve seen few roles pop up here and there for a product manager in a hedge fund. Curious to hear if folks have any info.

It looks like is managing the products (research, data, trading platform, etc.) of a hedge fund.  So it’s similar to any product manager role in a tech firm, but seems like the focus is more on the tools/technology that a hedge fund would use.

Any idea on comp? Career growth/prospect? etc. Or if you are doing something, would like to hear your thoughts as well.

thanks!

Very interested in hearing anyone's responses here.

To add my own 2 cents, all Product roles that I've seen described within HF/Buy Side are not akin to classic product roles in Tech/Fintech; for example, the customer is known, the budget is already set, the addressable market is irrelevant, product-market fit may be a simpler problem, etc. It seems that the word Product is used when in reality the role often boils down to a hybrid of Project Manager, (Technical) Business Analysis and some small spattering of Product Mgmt.

If anyone begs to differ, would be great to hear..

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Do you think folks can pivot from a buy-side/HF product to a tech focused? Or is it more of pigeonhole type deal?

It's a great question. I would say it ultimately comes down to the specifics of the role and if the competition for that role is from tech product or not. Are you currently a Product Manager at a HF ?

I am in product management in a BB for s&t. Without giving top much away - the product scope is on data/research/trading/platforms. I am also curious to see if comp for these roles - product in BB vs buyside/HF
