Quitting on Bonus Day - Navigating Internal Job Posting
Long time lurker first time poster. I work at a sleepy long-only asset manager and have a signed offer to join a hedge fund - just been waiting to resign when my bonus pays out in 6 weeks. My current seat supports our portfolio managers & feeds into PM seats - and of course, just now, a great junior PM role just opened up on the desk I directly support. I don't want it - my exit opp is still better - but the optics just became way tougher to manage.
Anyone in their right mind in my current seat would want to apply for this job - that is, if they weren't fleeing the firm - and I am the clear favorite who has expressed strong interest in the past and who is now being actively encouraged by my current manager (and the desk heads) to apply to what is essentially already mine. The process would be super quick - 2 weeks of hand waving and I'd likely have it easily (I've effectively been told). They only take internal candidates for this desk, and I know there's effectively no one else.
How do I navigate this? Obviously priority one is not tipping my hand and effecting my bonus (which still isn't set, much less paid out) - I'm worried that shrugging and saying "I'm not interested" is absurdly suspicious. But I also don't want to go through the full interview process and accept a job I don't even want just to leave a week or two later and massively burn the bridge.
I’d go through the process. No one knows you signed already.
Maybe shit the bed in interviews… idk tough decision.
Take the honest route and tell them you don't want the role / aren't interested. Suspicion will be better in the long run vs them hiring you / pushing you through, getting you set up and training you, all in all making them look foolish. They will respect you way more when you leave for doing them the favor of not applying for this seat
Follow this advice if you're willing to take a donut on your bonus.
Absolutely do not be honest.. lol
Oh yeah, being truly honest (about having another job) is obviously off the table. The real question is: will being honest that I’m not interested in the seat on the desk (blame something like current personal life issues) be sus enough to impact my bonus behind the scenes? I know I won’t get zeroed/fired based on my firm culture/anecdotes, but I wonder if it’ll make them view me as less of a budding star.
I think you need to go through the motions. But maybe you can slow roll the process so that you don't get them all spun up.
I think this is what I’m going to try to do - problem is, I’ve heard these things move fast (like a few weeks) at my shop. Will have to stall somehow
You could get covid for 2 weeks
Is there a different desk you support and you plausibly could want more? Maybe "hold-out" for that one.
Curious why you're looking to leave your seat? Sounds like a dream scenario, I wonder what LO this is.
Fixed Income LO and not top tier, vs Tier 1 global macro HF.
