Should I try to lateral to Quant HF?

Currently an AI researcher at a sell side firm. I joined right after college and have been with the company for little under 2 years.

Couple of my seniors left for buyside quant research positions and I'm thinking about doing the same.

The question is, do I move after I get promoted or do I lateral?

My choices are - if I stay a little longer, I can learn some skills (managerial, leadership, and other soft skills) I normally wouldn't at a buyside + build a unique network. If I try to leave ASAP, then I'd get a huge bump in comp + be working on what I'm really interested in right away.

Leave ASAP - buyside won't care much about sellside titles in QR from what I've seen.

I think you're overthinking it. Just start interviewing now- you won't get offers instantly and even if you do they may not all be good.
