Should I try to lateral to Quant HF?
Currently an AI researcher at a sell side firm. I joined right after college and have been with the company for little under 2 years.
Couple of my seniors left for buyside quant research positions and I'm thinking about doing the same.
The question is, do I move after I get promoted or do I lateral?
My choices are - if I stay a little longer, I can learn some skills (managerial, leadership, and other soft skills) I normally wouldn't at a buyside + build a unique network. If I try to leave ASAP, then I'd get a huge bump in comp + be working on what I'm really interested in right away.
Leave ASAP - buyside won't care much about sellside titles in QR from what I've seen.
I think you're overthinking it. Just start interviewing now- you won't get offers instantly and even if you do they may not all be good.
This is the right time to make the jump to buy side. As others have mentioned, it will be a while before you land a decent role so keep interviewing and hopefully something interesting lands on your plate.
no harm in waiting 1 more year...you will get the comp bump whenever you goto buyside...take every opportunity to learn from wide range of people while on sellside
Not sure why you think a unique network helps you if the work you are doing is not really of interest to you. As mentioned though will take a while to find the right fit for the role you want.
