Stay in PE or potentially recruit to HF

Hey All,

Currently a Assoc 1 in an UMM / MF (second tier, not the H&F / BX ones). I generally find the job ok so far even with intense 100 hour diligence weeks. I think the work is somewhat interesting but granted it can be a grind with a month straight without weekends. I am thinking about the HF route but mostly because I understand the pay is asymmetric where you can hit the 1m+ or even more quicker. I understand on a risk adjusted basis, people have said that PE probably makes more money so having a hard time deciding how much I want to go for HF. I don't know much or have a distinct passion about stocks as I don't really follow companies or try to understand why the stock goes up. No idea how to think about stock pitches either. I am very interested in Poker and somewhat good at it (low stakes) but understand thats also a different thing. If I were to look into HF just for the purpose of comp, does it really make sense or just try to stay in PE and get promoted as there is a decent visibility of senior assoc  vs being kicked out (or lets suppose that is the case here). Would just be curious on what people's perspectives are and if I should really all into try to to to a HF (preferably SM if can get in).

Fair point, I wouldn't say I am not interested its just more so don't have much experience. Didn't fullsome love doing PE either but grew into it as I got used to the work. If don't have the drive to look at company reports or earnings maybe its a sign

Interesting, would be curious on your perspective for a couple items:

  1. Assuming your firm has a traditional MBA pipeline? We don't do MBAs, we just promote directly
  2. Why didn't you go to SM directly from PE or was it just difficult coming from not a BX / H&F fund?
  3. How did you think about recruiting and was it generally difficult to do the preparation as I understand HF process is a lot more random in terms of questions asked and testing your knowledge
  4. What was the motivating factor for you to leave. Was it comp / WLB / interesting work and how has that thesis came to realization so far that makes you happy.

Appreciate in advance!
