Transferring decisions
Hey all,
So I was admitted as a transfer student to the University of Michigan and the University of Virginia, and I'm incredibly torn as to which one to go to. I realize that there are a lot of factors to consider in this process, but I've identified and elaborated on some of the highlights below.
Cost is virtually identical I would be a math major at both places (math with a concentration in finance) I live in Chicago right now, and I'd want to work in either Chicago or NYC after graduation I want to get involved in trading/HF after graduation Time to graduate would be identical I don't really have close friends at either university, and I'd be starting over socially at both places At Virginia I would be a BA, at Michigan a BS Where should I go and why?
Would think Michigan if you want Chicago. Otherwise seems like a toss up for the most part.

Yes, I know. You said in your original post. Clearly Michigan and UVA both do well in NY, would say Michigan has a very small edge. If there’s a chance you go to Chicago, it is Michigan by a mile.
Definitely this. Michigan is the quintessential target school for Chicago outside of NW/UChicago. That being said - I have friends who go to both and just finished up this recruiting cycle, both had BB NYC offers.
Going off that - Michigan CAN BE tough if you're not in Ross. My buddy actually wasn't and ended up landing BB SA but that took more effort had he been in Ross. UVA / McIntire isn't a crazy difference between b-school and non b-school and considering you're thinking about trading or HF, I'd imagine UVA would be a better fit. The Ross guys at UMich are still gonna compete w/ you for trading spots even being non-quant majors. UVA you might have a bit of an easier time, but can't go wrong w/ either.
If I work hard, get a killer GPA, and network, I can certainly land offers from top trading firms and quant hedge funds regardless of the competition at Ross right?
Totally. Like I said, you can't really go wrong. I also think if you do wanna go the quant route then math is more important than being in Ross. I'm just saying S&T programs at banks will recruit across lots of majors (finance / accounting to math / physics / engineering).

Yes, I get it. My point is that if you want Chicago optionality then Michigan is an obvious choice.
