Viking Spins
How are the recent Viking spins doing? (Voyager and Avala) It feels like Voyager never really hired many people and churned over their first COO. Know its not tied to Viking, but how is SurgoCap doing as well - seems like there's some turnover there too.
Bump
Voyager is essentially a FO and is doing well. Don't know about SurgoCap.
What do you mean Voyager is a family office?
.
Some churn here and there, some getting big $ to join pods, others bouncing around other SMs.
Mala is a great CIO I'm a fan of Surgo. Anomaly pretty good things to say, but they've also seen some departures...can interpret yourself. D1 I've never been more surprised by how little work a fund of that scale does; avoid avoid avoid avoid avoid. Junto good. Alua never interacted with. There are a few slated for 1H25, so we shall see
getting paid millions to do "little work" sounds like a positive for D1 if that is true
They don’t pay millions
Would you say the same about Tiger Global as you said about D1? What about other crossovers lime Altimeter/Dragoneer/Greenoaks?
Why do you say that about Mala? I’ve heard returns have been decent but I cant square it with the fact that I thought she was pretty removed from the investment process especially since it seems she’s building a multi sector book in healthcare / industrials / financials instead of just tmt which is her background. I’m not close so possibly what I’m saying is completely wrong
Alum used to work there and he did not have great things to say. Now hopped to a pod
Word on the street is turnover very high bc of PM
What is the latest on D1? Any views on how they compare to other tiger cubs / grandcubs?
Above poster is correct. Don’t really respect D1 research quality anymore, although varies per partner there. People seem pretty checked out. Think it’s a terrible place to go as a junior from a development perspective.
What's the problem with their research? Do they not cover a company deeply enough?
I believe some software / TMT guys “spun out” to go to BAM. Not sure if anyone has any color there?
Not sure if they’ve started deploying already or if they’re held up in a non-compete period (if Viking even has that).
Yes he's a smart guy I like him and his junior. Great guys
He got paid
Avala is actually pretty decent, got some experienced peeps in there now.
Do you know which recuiter they use?
Prob DSP
Don't know. Maybe reach out to their linkedin.
Know an alum at surgo, they are sharp as hell
Kind of surprised because I have chatted with healthcare people there and didn't seem all that special. Not that they aren't sharp by any means, just seemed fairly vanilla if that makes sense... Been a tough time with the GEHC and UNH trades.
CRS on the other hand has been a great money maker, if not a consensus HF long at this point
I mean look at their returns. Whatever they’re doing is really working for them. Would love to work there
Surgo is solid and not even in the “they are smart” way. They’re just not stupid and aren’t punting on only META/NFLX/NVDA/SPOT. Multisector has been a very smart move.
