I think a better question is what kind of performance and pnl figures u need to put up in order to make that much

 

Not sure how many analysts eventually end up making that much but if u work at pershing, lone pine, tiger or viking and arent atleast making that much, then you're an abject failure because everyone else definitely is

 

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but is the pay really that high at those funds? I assumed analysts made 1-2mm their first few years there and then only broke the 8 figure mark after at least 5-6 years assuming good but not senator-tier performance.

 

Ah! I should've worded my comment better. When I said "everyone " I meant everyone 5+ years in as the question was referring to more senior analysts as opposed to juniors. So you're very much correct here although if you're good enough u can start making that much 3 years in. I have a couple friends at tiger and they both made partner within 3 years and thats when you're bonus gets linked to fund performance and sky is  the(was before this year lol) limit afterwards
