What to expect in a second round interview at a multi manager HF?

Already talked to Business Development, then talked to the PM for half an hour, made a pitch. I was expecting a case study next but instead I have been asked to visit the office. Any idea what I should be prepared for?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you should prepare for in a second-round interview at a multi-manager hedge fund:

  1. Deeper Dive into Your Pitch: Since you've already made a pitch, expect the PM or other team members to grill you further on your investment idea. Be ready to defend your thesis, address potential risks, and discuss alternative scenarios (e.g., bear, base, and bull cases). They may also ask how your idea aligns with the fund's strategy.

  2. Behavioral and Fit Questions: Meeting in the office often includes assessing your cultural fit with the team. Be prepared to answer questions about your motivations, career goals, and how you work in a team environment. They may also explore your thought process and decision-making style.

  3. Technical Questions: While you might not get a formal case study, technical questions could still come up. For example, you might be asked to explain valuation methods (e.g., DCF, public comps, etc.), walk through financial statements, or discuss how you would analyze a specific company or sector.

  4. Meeting with Other Team Members: It's common to meet other members of the investment team during an office visit. Each person may have a different focus—some might test your technical skills, while others might focus on your market knowledge or fit within the team.

  5. Market Knowledge and Current Events: Be up to date on market trends, especially in sectors relevant to the fund. You might be asked for your views on recent events or how they could impact specific investments.

  6. General Q&A: Prepare thoughtful questions about the fund's strategy, culture, and investment process. This shows genuine interest and helps you stand out.

Since you're visiting the office, this is likely a critical stage in the process. Make sure to bring your A-game, dress professionally, and be ready to engage with everyone you meet. Good luck!
