2018 Incoming Analyst Apartment Hunt/Roommates

First off, I credit immensely and am thankful for the WSO community that helped me navigate through IB SA recruiting / SA stint leading to FT conversion etc.

I'm a college senior graduating in May 2018 with a FT IB gig starting in July 2018. Knowing it's November 2017, I realize it may be too early to think about this but always better to plan ahead.

Question1: Do you find a roommate(s) BEFORE you hunt for an apartment or vice versa?

Question2: For apt hunt, are there well established, credible sites that list openings? I think the consensus of this forum is NOT* using a broker since they charge you absurdly.

My work will be in Midtown so if you can drop some names on good apartments around Midtown, I would greatly appreciate that as well.

Thanks a lot again for your help on this.

Streeteasy is the best single website in NY.

Just an FYI, it is tough to find apartments in NY much more than a month before a lease will start and very very tough to find apartments more than 2 months before a lease will start (I would almost say next to impossible unless you are looking at more expensive apartments than you should as an analyst).

Living within walking distance of work is nice, but if you live near the subway that stops near your office you can get to midtown very quickly from downtown (if you want to be somewhere fun when you're not in the office) or uptown (if you want to have a bigger or nicer apartment / save some $). Decide what matters most to you.
