Advice for Incoming Frosh at Target
Hey everyone, Current Senior in hs that just got into one of HYPS. Want to break into IB but don’t know jack shit, and have been seeing all these posts about how so many people absolutely sleep through recruiting and realize late junior year that they’re fucked. I was wondering if anyone can point me to some sort of “super guide” or maybe even offer some of your own advice on wtf I should be doing with my time starting now. Thanks so much in advance.
Take a chill pill and enjoy your freshman year. I mean it. Soon you will be a sad little first year analyst who regret that they didn’t have as much fun as they should’ve in college because of a silly little finance job.
^^^ hit the gym, fuck hot girls, drink some beer, and get good grades. Worry about all of that sophomore year
Working out does do wonders
Maybe it’s because I lack the hindsight, but as a freshman at a target I kinda disagree. Ofc, have fun, but my biggest advice is to grind all your work during the week and have good weekends. Hit the ground running because most other people are doing that too. I didn’t really know what I was doing career wise and I regret it because i feel behind everyone else. Other advice is if you’re from a “regular” school (not boarding/day/extremely competitive hs) you will probably feel overwhelmed and that’s ok. Just observe for a little because these spaces at these types of schools are kinda like new planets in terms of socializing/wealth. Don’t get in your head that you’re any different, because you DID get in and you do deserve to be there. Also people lie…a lot. So the most seemingly confident people are some of the most scared.
Ok freshman sit back and let the big bros talk
Balance both relaxing and exploring finance -- It would be nice to get some relevant experience lined up for next summer. I would also reach out to people within clubs, since these people can mentor and guide you throughout the process. You have already set yourself up well by getting into HYPS, so don't stress too hard over your Freshman year.
Thank you for your informative response
Not at HYPSW. Should I be looking to do more my freshman year to make up for the fact that I will not be attending a super target? Currently feeling a bit restless, and would really appreciate advice. TY
I honestly think that at this point you need to start drafting your first LinkedIn post. I will start it for you:
I am Delloited to announce that I have accepted…
You will be fine with zero to minimal effort at those schools. Focus on getting good grades and having fun. No need to do anything until freshman summer if you want to have some short, casual internship - soph year is when you should come back here and start thinking about networking and technicals. Don't bother with anything now
The people who show up late and get into trouble are at non-targets - plenty of HYPS seniors land FT jobs with only minimally relevant junior internships.
Make friends and be less of a tight ass… maybe talk to a girl or two also if ur feeling adventurous
There’s a balance. You just need to get started, get introduced to finance as a freshman. For the most part you should enjoy your first year and be social. Hit it hard near the end of freshman year and don’t let off the gas until you get a SA offer.
