ADVICE NEEDED: Trying to go from commercial banking to CIB

Hi everyone,

Currently a SA at WF looking to move internally from commercial banking (credit) to corporate banking or investment banking for full time. Any advice for what I should say as my "why" when networking? or any advice in general? Anything is appreciated, thanks.

Make sure you let people in your group (commercial banking) know as early as possible about wanting to make the move. They are pretty flexible and understanding people.

I agree with the above posters saying don't tell your manager before your return offer. But once you start full time you're going to have plenty of 1 on 1s early on with your manager for career building conversations about your future goals and tell him that you're interested in moving over to CIB after a couple of years. It makes you not seem like a weasel/undedicated if he finds out you're networking behind his back and makes you honest which will likely encourage him to help you out

It's definitely manager-dependent. A good manager will ask you questions like"where do you see yourself in 5 years" and you can ease him into it after a few convos over 6-12 months. Personally, I would start off by being naturally inquisitive/excited about the company in general and asking your manager "what does X team do, what is Y person's role, etc" to get a lay of the land and then start networking with analysts/associates. The more natural it seems the better. And then in the 1-2+ years range on the job keep an eye out for openings and ask for intros/referrals. Even better if it's a team you've networked with pre-referral. Moving internally will always involve the hiring manager reaching out to your current manager for his/her thoughts about you. As long as your work product is solid, no one would be mad at you for taking interest in the different parts of the company
