Advice on next steps to move into IB

Hi everyone,

I am a student from a non-target state school majoring in Economics with a low gpa (2.7). I'll be graduating this October and I am currently taking summer classes to finish. Long story short I was with the wrong crowd for most of my undergrad and I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life.

For the summer going into my junior year and the summer after, I held an internship at a small hedgefund (but only had admin responsibilities and worked in the back office). I want to get into IB but I understand with my background it will be very difficult to do so. I am looking to get a Masters in Finance as soon as possible after undergrad in order to re-brand myself with better networking and GPA to hopefully become an IB analyst by age 24/25. I have an idea of what schools I want to apply to and will start prepping for the GMAT when I am done with my undergrad classes, but if anyone can offer some examples of schools that have strong Finance programs or any other advice for a person in my situation that would be great.

Does this route seem realistic? If not, what other alternatives are there? Also, how can I leverage my work experience in the hedgefund despite my work not being finance related? Thank you for your time.

Your ability to get an MBA is a card you can only play once. I would recommend looking into boutiques and holding off on getting your MBA so early. Youll have a better chance at top schools and will be able to lateral from a small IB to a MM position or potentially even a PE shop.

In terms of leveraging your experience, speak about why you chose that position and what you got out of it. Hopefully you got close to some of the PMs and they mentored you or shared some insight.

I'm actually looking into getting Master's in Finance which is typically a 1 year graduate program, not an MBA. I plan on getting an MBA but much later when I have more relevant work experience.
