Anyone else feel like they don't fit in to the M&A world?
I'm a new hire in M&A, not in IB, in a big city, but it feels kind of daunting to be in here. Everyone here has really expensive tastes. I do spend quite a bit of money, but I feel like most people here come from very privileged backgrounds, and really like to live it up. Everyone always has something going on every weekend, and I'm like, I got no plans at all, just chilling at home. I'm in a long-distance relationship too, and I don't really have any friends, outside of my parents and my girlfriend. And you know, I have no desire to make any friends! I love life, and I don't feel lonely at all. I enjoy the people close to me the most, and I am happy sitting at home on a weekend / exploring the city's street food!
Other than that, I do truly love M&A, but I don't feel like I fit in, socially speaking.
Del. misread post.
Based on the information provided in my knowledge base, it seems like you're experiencing a common feeling among those who come from different backgrounds than their peers in high finance roles. Here are some thoughts and advice:
Cultural Fit Concerns: It's not uncommon to feel out of place in environments where the majority come from privileged backgrounds. Remember, your unique perspective and experiences can be valuable assets in the M&A world.
Social Dynamics: It's okay to have different social preferences. Not everyone needs to be outgoing or have a packed social calendar to succeed in their career. Enjoying your own company and the company of a few close loved ones is perfectly valid.
Long-Distance Relationship: Balancing a demanding job with a long-distance relationship can be challenging. It's important to communicate openly with your partner and find ways to stay connected.
Loving M&A: Your passion for M&A is a significant strength. Focus on your work and let your performance speak for itself. Over time, you may find colleagues who share your interests and values.
Exploring the City: Embrace your love for exploring the city's street food and other activities you enjoy. This can be a great way to unwind and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Remember, fitting in socially is not a prerequisite for professional success. Stay true to yourself and your values, and you'll find your place in the industry.
