Approaching My Girlfriend's Uncle...

My girlfriend's uncle is an MD at a MM and I'm going to be meeting him for the first time at a wedding in a few weeks. I'd really like to leverage him as much as I can for an SA position in the future, but I don't know how to approach it while we're at this wedding without looking overbearing. Does anybody have any advice?

In the words of Chipmunk in his song, Champion,

"If they put you on a pedestal, they can take you off..."

remember that... when shit hits the fan what the hell you gonna do?

TRUE STORY: The prospect asked me, "What's it like to work at ****?" I asked him, "You ever been to Home Depot?" "Yes" "Well, it's like that. It's full of fucking tools." And he stared, innocently wide-eyed and nodded with deep understanding

You - "So what do you do?" -- Never fails.

Him - "I work in IB at this baller bank"

You - "Hey, that's pretty cool. I'm actually studying finance in school and I'm interning at this other not-so-ballin bank this summer in their PWM division"

Him - "Nice. Any thoughts on what you want to do after college?"

You get the idea. Hopefully the conversation goes something like that.

Also, don't have this conversation in front of your girlfriend or she might think you are using her to get a job.

never fails lol.

But I'm sure as I get older, it's not going to fly as much.

CaliBankerSFSon,

Let's chat at the wedding. No need to turn to the blogs for this.

Uncle Tim

I think the "PE-1st year associate" is a giveaway on this one.

Yeah I'm personally more in favor of the just asking your gf for an introduction. Just comes across as less deceptive i think. See if you guys can do something after the wedding - that way your not asking him at the wedding and youll get some quality time to bond with him.

Why not just be straightforward? Let him know that your gf told you she has an uncle in finance, which happens to be your major. Then ask about his group and that you'd like to stay in touch with him.

Baby you're the perfect shape, baby you're the perfect weight. Treat me like my birthday, I want it this way and I want it that way. It makes a man feel good baby.

Just make sure you stay with the girl to utilize him as long as you can.

Here to learn and hopefully pass on some knowledge as well. SB if I helped.

i disagree with the "strike up a conversation" approach suggested above. if you just follow him around and start asking him about his job while pretending you didn't already know...it will be obvious and awkward.

the best way is for your girlfriend to mention your interest in banking to her uncle beforehand ("my bf is interested in finance, would it be cool for him to pick your brain?") and then make the intro at the wedding. that way it's still casual but the fact that you "want something" is baked into his expectations. sort of like emailing an alum for "advice".

I like this idea. I can usually carry a conversation pretty well, but it'd be good for him to know that I'm interested in what he does beforehand I think. Good Advice.
