Asking a roommate to decide to leave or resign lease ?

Is asking a roommate if they are going to stay or leave 90 days in advance to far in advance?  I am a busy being in banking and typically also hate apartment shopping. Is 90 days to far in advance to ask a roommate to make a decision.  I feel like its not given the fact that then leaves some options for me to either find a roommate or find a new place.  

Curious what the consensus is on this?

You left out a couple of key details. Would you live with your roommate again (in this apartment or a new one) and would you resign the lease with a different roommate? Do you have other people you want to live with? I don’t think you need to make them commit to anything, just try to gauge their interest.

I think the approach here is one of the following:

1. Hey, the end of are lease is coming up soon, are you interested in resigning?

2. Hey, I really like you but this apartment sucks, want to look elsewhere?

3. Hey, the end of the lease is coming up and I’m kinda busy with work and am trying to figure out my apartment plans ahead of time. What were you thinking of doing?
