Asking about Deal Flow (Interview)
I’ve got an interview for an internship at a very small boutique bank. Deal flow seems to be important in order to secure FT roles down the line. I’m worried about not getting much (or any) marketable live deal experience. Their past transactions listed on the site are pretty obscure and scattered and their “current transactions” are similarly vague. Can I just ask about what deals they’re working on in the interview? What’s the best way to go about this?
They’re also very LATAM focused. Would that confine me in any way and make it hard to get into different IB groups?
They may not be able to divulge much information on what deals they are working on due to confidentiality reasons. However, you can ask them what industries or transaction types (eg sellside, buyside, private placements, general financial advisory etc.) they spend most of their time working on
A question which should provide some deal flow insight without being offensive is "How is your time generally split between origination and execution?" If the shop is a pure pitch mill the origination % will be high relative to execution
Thank you! This is exactly what I was after. What’s a pretty standard origination to execution % ?
