Asset Management or Investment Banking @ Boutique

Hello,

I am currently working at an asset manager as an analyst and recently received an offer at an IB Boutique. The Boutique offer is in a different city and I am debating if I should take the offer. My end goal is Private Equity. Recent graduate FYI.

Here are the details on the two roles.

  •  Asset Manager:
    • Pay: ~70K base, 5-10% Bonus
    • Location: Low/Mid COL City
    • Hours: 40hs/week
    • Company: Great culture and benefits + job security, well known in certain circles, large AUM base; Lower pay progression and less room for promotion
    • Role: Top down oriented but firm is expanding into PE and Credit (using external managers); Financial Analysis more macro and not relevant to PE
  • Boutique:
    • Pay: ~75k base, 20-25k Est. Bonus Floor
    • Location: High COL City
    • Hours: ~60hrs+ on average
    • Company: Great benefits, unknown for IB however it is under a public company (relatively known asset manager); Structured pay progression w/ increased bonus %
    • Role: Typical IB; Possible exit to PE but more likely a bigger IB shop
