Banking as an Outdoorsman?

I’m hitting the desk full time in a few months as an analyst after my summer internship and was wondering if there’s any other avid outdoorsman here that have gone into banking and how they attempt to balance those two parts of life.

Everyone says having hobbies is the way to get some semblance of a WLB, however, nearly all of my biggest sources of pleasure come from hiking, surfing, skiing, camping, etc. Obviously not very compatible with being an analyst-1 at a BB in NYC.

Before anyone says “well maybe you shouldn’t be in banking then”, I love the city, had a great time last summer, and enjoy my job a lot. Just want to stay connected to that part of my life.

Has anyone else dealt with this transition that can give shed some light on their experience?

Depending on what you like to do outdoors, you can certainly get your fix in NYC/Greater NYC.

My experience has been:

  • For easy access - Lean into parks.  I moved near Central Park for many reasons, but mostly for easy access for walks, bike rides, and finding a secluded bench to smoke a spliff and stare into space.  Prospect Park is also great, Riverside Park is lovely, Carl Schurz park is crowded but a place to go.  Also most of the perimeter of Manhattan (starting ~34th on the east side, around the tip, up to the GWB) is park-esque and a good spot to be.
  • If you have more time, Bear Mountain is ~45 miles north of Manhattan and will give you a more meaningful fix with hiking and more seclusion.  You can also explore all the towns on the West side of the Hudson (i.e. Piermont, Nyack, look at gaudy mansions in Alpine, etc.) or visit Hudson Park which is just over the GWB.  On the off chance you're a cyclist, these trips are very accessible via 9W.
  • The Hudson river towns on the east side are more accessible via the Metro-North.  It is very easy to take a train up to Tarrytown, Peekskill, or Garrison.  These are easy day trips that can get you out of the city.  Just a 1 hour train ride and you're in a completely different world.
  • If you're planning a weekend the possibilities really open up.  The Poconos are a 2 hour drive, New Paltz (Mohonk Preserve) is 90 minutes, Saratoga is 3 hours, The Berkshires are 3 hours.  Vermont is definitely a haul, but more than worth it.
