Barcap IBD vs UBS IBD
I currently have offers for SA from both Barcap and UBS IBD. Recently looked at some 2010 league tables and saw that Barcap was 4th in US M&A, while UBS was not in top ten (for US, for overall IBD Barclays was 7th and UBS 8th). So while obviously Barcap has a bit more prestige, I was wondering if anyone had any information about culture, people, business style, ect. Honestly for me getting the best SA experience and training is the most important.
Also one concern I have with UBS is that I've heard of some massive movements from the bank to other BB banks (Healthcare group, ect). Any more information on how much of that is true and how it would effect the bank from an overall standing? Is looking at news like that important to consider as a SA?
I have a friend that works in Private Equity and he swears by UBS. They might be going through some stuff right now, but they are working hard to head in the right direction. I think I might call some of the people you met early on and ask some questions. This part of the game is nearly about FIT since both of these firms will give you superb training.
Barcap>UBS. While UBS used to be a powerhouse, the general consensus is that a lot of senior talent has left. Barcap still has much of the Lehman old guard and has less risk. UBS was once a great bank and may pop back up in a few years, but as an sa i would take barcap.
well everyone in healthcare jumped ship to jefferies. ubs la, formerly one of the best shops in the us, was decimated and many of the senior bankers jumped to other banks in la, particularly moelis.
the argument can be made that ubs is no longer a bb.
BarCap IBD is the clear winner here. Absolutely no question about it.
A top group at UBS > mid or lower group at Barclays. It seems that the worst is behind UBS while Barclays faces some uncertainties in terms of layoffs, etc. It is not as easy as many on this board would make it seem. Have friends at both that like and dislike both.
What do people dislike abuot UBS? The reputation issues in the US?

Both banks are nothing special. Barclays is ok, UBS is awful. I know plenty of people at both. UBS is losing talent everywhere. Barclays seems to be lacking deal flow and my friends are trying to leave to another bank. They said they have problems as well.
