Barclays Groups

Hey guys, trying to decide if I should take an offer from Barclays IB NYC that expires in a few days. What is the group placement like, and which groups are top performers? I know healthcare is great, but I want to know what else is out there/which have the best deal flow/best exits.

Group placement is extremely competitive, especially if you didn't summer there. If you have a different offer with a guaranteed coverage group, I would look that way. It is my understanding you can still be placed in ECM/DCM with the generalist offer at Barclays.

The good news: there's no "bad" coverage groups. Pretty much any coverage will put you in a strong position for buyside recruiting (of course, some slightly less than others). The "best" reputation-wise are probably P&U, NatRes, FSG, Industrial (killer WLB but good exits), Healthcare. Tech is rising fast, but maybe even worse WLB than Industrials. CnR, M&T, FIG, are all solid too, and Real Estate isn't bad (mid-tier of BBs) but probably slightly less desirable.

Bad news: offers are usually generalist for a position in IB/CapMkts. Meaning you have a chance of getting placed into ECM/DCM/some niche esoteric product group, if A) you don't summer there B) you don't have good alumni base/contacts. If you summer there, even if you end up in some random product group, you're still much more likely to end up in coverage at Barclays FT than someone new who got a FT offer, as they are generally pretty solid with internal transfers.

They have a good rotational program after your first year and a half to two years or so, so if you end up in CnR DCM it's generally pretty easy to move to a coverage group as an AN3/AS1

To echo the above - mobility is very important at Barclays and given the current environment of exits before two years, there is a good chance you could switch to another coverage group from LF/DCM/ECM if you wanted to before your third year. I have seen people do it before their two years and then there is the mobility program for your third year which can help you move geography, coverage group, or just do a temporary switch (4-6 months).
