Question

hi! i am an incoming summer analyst at barclays. because i didn't start networking till april, when most of the coverage groups have filled up intern spots, i will be working in a product group this summer. i'm planning to do my best learning and getting a return offer, but was wondering how easy/hard is it to change group for ft? fyi i'm interested in coverage because i'd like to exit to pe

additionally, what's the best ways to increase my chance of switching to coverage?

Pretty misleading because most interns return to the same group for full time - especially in coverage. This is because of familiarity in the group. So the only spots in coverage that open up are typically from interns that are not accepting the return offer. Getting coverage for full time is pretty competitive (but definitely not impossible) if you didn’t intern in coverage.

Just kill it this summer and get good reviews and start networking early when it comes to full time placement.

You’ll probably be working in my group (M&A product). Think moving to coverage should be fine. If you are in my team then I’m happy to connect you with VPs in whatever coverage you want to be in and staff you on deals in the same sector so you get to work with the coverage bankers from the sector you are interested in.

Bottom line, do what you want to do and be smart about getting staffed. You’d be surprised on the power of communication and letting your staffers know what you are interested in. All the best

Second this... network hard and try to find out what groups have the most spots and focus on those (i.e. Barc Power is probably not worth chasing even if you know people)

Also make sure everyone in your group really likes you - i.e. make time for coffee with product folks too. After you send networking emails, the first call will be to anyone they know in your old group.

I work at Barclays and believe the above is pretty spot on.

However, in my experience (which is by no mean exhaustive) SA to FT switches are quite a crapshoot and very difficult to happen, especially if you're not in a sought after group to begin with (so it becomes a catch 22 as that's usually the case for people who want to switch). Easier if you are a woman, albeit still not granted.

OP, I would follow the advice you already received from other users, but to avoid disappointments, I would also assume as base case having to spend 1 year FT in your SA group before making the switch.
