BB S&T vs MM IBD

What are your thoughts? Deciding between this right now and have 24 hours to commit to one. The firm is much better for S&T, and I think it may be more my personality, but at the same time, I don't want to pigeonhole myself to exit if I don't love it. Also, I have heard the MM IB is growing very quickly with the guys they are bringing from Evercore and PJT

Choosing between a BB S&T position and an MM IBD role can indeed be a tough decision, especially considering your concerns about exit opportunities and personal fit. Here’s a breakdown to help you weigh your options:

  1. Personality and Interest Alignment: If S&T aligns more with your personality and interests, this could lead to greater job satisfaction and performance. S&T roles are dynamic, involve quick decision-making, and require staying updated with market movements, which might suit a more extroverted and high-energy personality.

  2. Firm Reputation and Division Strength: You mentioned that the firm is much better for S&T. A role in a stronger division at a more reputable firm can provide better training, exposure, and prestige. These factors can significantly enhance your resume and professional growth.

  3. Exit Opportunities and Versatility: While it's true that S&T might offer fewer traditional exit routes into fields like private equity, it doesn’t mean you’re completely pigeonholed. Skills in S&T are transferable to various roles in asset management, hedge funds, or trading at other financial institutions. Moreover, internal mobility within a BB can allow you to transition to different roles if S&T doesn’t resonate with you later on.

  4. Growth and Opportunities in MM IBD: The MM IBD you mentioned is growing and attracting talent from top firms like Evercore and PJT, which suggests strong leadership and potential high-quality deal flow. This could be a great environment for learning and growth, with possibly more hands-on experience in deals compared to a BB.

  5. Long-Term Career Goals: Consider where you see yourself in the long term. If your ultimate goal aligns more with investment banking or private equity, MM IBD might provide more relevant experience. However, if you are inclined towards markets, trading, or portfolio management, S&T at a BB could be more beneficial.

In conclusion, both options have their merits. If you feel strongly aligned with the pace and nature of S&T and value the prestige and training opportunities of a BB, leaning towards S&T might be more suitable. However, if you foresee a potential shift in your career path towards investment banking or related fields, the MM IBD could offer a strategic starting point.
