It varies a bit. You'll see SF offices, Silicon Valley offices, LA offices, even Seattle and San Diego. I don't think any firm has locations in all of them. You could get some insight by browsing the various websites - they list their IB branches. There will also be top independent firms indigenous to the area (like Qatalyst) and ones with offices too (Evercore, Moelis, etc).

Ahh you're right sayandarula, I read that incorrectly in the other post. It said that ML Palo Alto was laughable (in addition to the rest of ML west coast [if anyone could shed light on why it's such a joke that'd be great]) and has had a rivalry with MS Menlo Park. No mention of its reputation, so that's my bad.

just a warning kinginthenorth... "prestige" and "reputation" threads have been discussed ad nauseum on this forum so you may not get much response. worst case you get showered with shit by your fellow monkeys.

but generally speaking, MS Menlo Park is possibly the most prestigious investment banking group out there, next to GS TMT in New York... or so they say on these forums. for more detailed rankings, use the search funtion for "prestige rankings west coast" or some shit... i'm sure names will come up.

i'm not really in the industry, but i think you should see names like Moelis in LA and MS in Menlo Park.

Money Never Sleeps? More like Money Never SUCKS amirite?!?!?!?

Also, to answer your question, BAML's Lev Fin group is split between NYC and Charlotte. Wish they had a presence in LA or out west too though. One of, if not the best lev fin groups out there and most likely BAML's strongest group at the bank.
