Best internships for freshman
I know I’m super late to it and should’ve prepared a few months ago but my original plan got derailed so I’m thinking of getting an internship for the summer
Anyone with freshman year internship experiences mind suggesting some? I’m from a non-target LAC(target for some 2nd tier east coast cities I guess?) I don’t know what to go for as most firms don’t hire freshman for interns for FO roles and I’m worried that if I apply for back office/middle office roles (there’s some alumni that I’ve networked with in BO/MO so I can probably reach out) it’ll hurt my attempts to get FO internships next year. I’m willing to accept almost anything as long that it’ll be beneficial for my career.
More details : Top 20 LAC, 3.8 GPA, Most likely Quantitative Economics Major, International and wiling to do unpaid internship but paid would be best. I can use CPT for internships so a visa probably won’t be an issue
IB Boutique, PWM, search fund, commercial banking, anything finance. Start networking too. Cold emails
I’m a freshman and I just recently was offered an internship at a search fund. Almost all of them are unpaid, and mostly sourcing work, but you can get some decent modeling experience if you ask the operator/advisors to work on it with them. Also, you get to put Private Equity Summer Analyst on your resume, and that helps a ton. If this sounds interesting I recommend cold-emailing some search funds in your area or see if anyone from your school has interned for one recently and ask them how they got their position.
Ok, thx for the advice! I'll begin searching for some search funds in my city
Dont you think "Private Equity Summer Analyst" is a bit of a stretch for a search fund internship? I get that there's no formal definition but summer analyst generally means you can return as an analyst. Ive never heard of a search fund that hires interns back.
CPT can get you to unpaid internships, but larger firms or paid internships can still block you out, especially off-cycle ones. Recommendations: search fund, independent sponsors (better than search fund), and small investment banking boutiques.
OP - DM me. I'm seeking what you are pursuing, if you want to have an initial chat
Tiger Global or RenTech
I think Third Point or Pershing might actually be a better bet. If all else fails you can go to BX or Bridgewater. Just some food for thought.
While you can use CPT for an internship, many firms still don't want to deal with the perceived hassles. My suggestion would be to get a good internship in your home country and try and snag something your sophomore summer in the US when you have more experience (my school also places a limit on the no. of CPTs so if that's the case for you, would not want to waste a CPT on a freshman summer internship) so that better firms are willing to take you on. I did that and I am going to an excellent coverage group this summer.
