Best Investment Bank for Each Decade
Hi guys,
After reading a little bit about historic IB firms such as DLJ, First Boston etc., I was just wondering whether we could get a few comments on which IBs dominated specific decades. I know that is probably quite irrelevant for recruiting atm but should be a fun touchpoint for interpreting IB experience of previous generations and how each current bank is historically positioned.
I think we can all agree that since the crisis it has been between GS, MS and JPM.
1660's: Dutch West India for s&t

1490's : Spanish conquistadors for M&A of the "new world" aka West Indian markets
1933-1945: NSDAP, Sell-Side M&A Specialist
1200s - Mongol Empire. Undisputed leader in S&T and trade finance.

Barings Bank, Rothchilds, Solomon brothers. Some of the ones that used to be significant but no longer around/not what it used to be.

would say drexel for the 80's
CSFB deserves a nod for the late 90s- early 2000s (mostly for TMT). Frank Quattrone and his team absolutely dominated the tech space for that period from what I hear.
agreed, I think GS then was mostly an S&T Powerhouse and made a killing in their IPO then. Would say that they came on top of the 00's as they did fine in the crisis.
