After reading threads on WSO, I know people are discussing different courses like M&I, WSP or WSO, but I want to know if we need to know hands-on knowledge about excel models if we are only looking for a summer IB intern offer? If modeling is not required, which package would be most recommended?

You can get by with just a technical question guide. Your school probably has some/one of them in their files. The 400Q M&I guide is pretty standard and will get you what you need to know. Don’t know as much about the WSO guide but imagine that it’s solid as well.
Yeah don’t over do it in the beginning and set urself up for failure. One step at a time and that includes reaching out to people and networking 1 person at a time. The guide is plenty but have people mentor you in how to build a DCF and LBO if you want to learn that way.
