Best way to learn how to model proficiently for an analyst 2? Want to go to corp dev

This might sound silly but I'm in a coverage group that barely models. I'm looking for Corp Dev or Growth Equity exits but am not feeling confident about my modelling skills at all
Has anyone been in a similar situation and if so what has been the best resource to improve? Also with regards to corp dev case studies what's the best way to get better at not only putting models but also thinking and justifying synergies, thinking about the strategic side of M&A etc?

Depends what you want to actually learn with “how to model”.

For my group we make operating models that are super detailed in some aspects but they aren’t usually LBOs and merger models not as common. So if you wanted to learn how to make a model for my group, you’d want to practice how to forecast specific line items, make a detailed cost build, etc.

If you want to do PE interviews, LBO is the most important, but I never do that at my bank. So learning to do LBOs was a completely different execute. Same with public merger models and so on.

My point is figure out the end goal and go from there. If you are interviewing for growth, most of the modeling will be related to SaaS models and revenue projections, which may or may not relate to what you’re banking model might look like. Corp dev entirely different as well.

Need to just figure out the end goal and then find a bunch of old examples and rebuild them. It’s a repetition game but luckily every bank has like a million old models for every type of deal going around
