Big Law (Banking & M&A) Associate Looking to Lateral into Restructuring at a BB/EB – Advice on Best Path?

I’m currently a 2nd-year associate at a top-tier Big Law firm, primarily focused on Banking & Finance and M&A. A significant portion of my work is closely intertwined with financial structuring, distressed lending, and sponsor-backed deals, so I’ve developed a solid understanding of credit docs, capital structures, and transactional risk.

I’m looking to make the transition into investment banking—specifically into a Restructuring group at a BB or EB. I’m very drawn to the blend of technical financial modeling, strategic advisory, and distressed deal work in RX, and I believe my current legal skill set aligns well with the demands of the group.

Would really appreciate insight on:

  1. Best path to break in – lateraling into a Restructuring group vs. other product/coverage groups with a view to transfer later?
  2. Technical skills – what are the most relevant financial modeling or valuation techniques I should master to be competitive? (I’m currently brushing up on 3-statement modeling, DCFs, LBOs, and basic restructuring mechanics).
  3. Best groups/firms – which RX groups (BB/EB) are particularly strong or open to candidates from legal backgrounds?

Open to any advice, especially from folks who’ve made a similar transition or worked with Big Law laterals.

Thanks in advance!
