I’ve seen this alluded to in other posts, but I’ve always wondered how a thing like blacklisting could happen across multiple firms in an industry. if someone did something egregious, how would other firms catch wind of this?

Yep - if somebody is insanely rude (like that UT kid in the recent thread shitting on all the Moelis guys), you know they're instantly reaching out to their buddies at recent banks saying "DO NOT HIRE"
