Career Resources
Group dependent.
Metals & Mining - Best mining group in the world so great experience but will come with abuse which is the tradeoff
P&U - Used to be good culture with the old staffer, not sure how it is now
Diversified - Not a good culture
ECM/DCM - Heard positive things, lots of Mining and DIG analysts switch to ECM/DCM for a chiller lifestyle later
FIG - Great culture and great staffer (not sure if shes still around) heard they (or used to) sit across from the mining team and the mining analyst/interns would watch them leave by 8/9PM while they slaved away till past midnight
Thank you for the detailed answer. If you had to choose between FIG and M&M, what would you choose?
Probably M&M. FIG is a great culture but with M&M you get the recognition of being in an "elite" group and strong deal experience as well as a bit of extra money if you care about that. Either way though, it comes down to personal preference
Do you know more about ECM hours and WFH policy?
Not sure about WFH but ECM/DCM is not more than 60 hours
for an internship, how would you compare M&M with M&A?
The FIG staffer moved up the ranks, no longer the staffer for the group, but she is still in FCP. Great lady.
How is their Tech group?
it's mostly financings with very little M&A. The groups where you will get real M&A exposure is Metals & Mining, DIG and P&U
P&U Culture is a lot like it used to be. Team is pretty small but definitely very good culture as the staffer generally looks out for everyone. Seniors are all generally very nice as well.
How are ECM hours and culture like?
Interned in ECM a while back - will caveat the junior team has changed but seniors are mostly the same. Culture is decent, BMO is just a hostile, not good culture bank compared to the other Canadians, but ECM one of the better groups compared to the rest. Hours for ECM is chill, Analysts pull 7am - 7pm with it ticking down from there as you get more senior.
I don't know why but several BMO groups are hardo central, noticeably so compared to TD and RBC which is kind of odd.
Can anyone comment on DCM of late? Specifically Infra Cap Markets that sits within DCM at BMO?
Infra DCM is mega chill
Is it really 40-50 hours / week like they say?
bump, is it still the same 2 years later? Recieved an offer and considering among other B5
Yes they have the worst culture out of the B5
culture fantastic, was an analyst in mining and while there wasnt a ton of junior camaraderie/support, hours were 60-65/week with the occasional 75 hour weeks during crunch time
