BNPP Coverage - Global Banking questions
I am interviewing for BNPP's internship in this division and would really appreciate any insight into the division.
Is this corporate banking or investment banking? They talk about 'relationship mgmt' in the job desc but it also mentions financial modelling, pitches, etc. and it suggests that one would be able to work in sector teams.
On BNPP's website it mentions 'Coverage and Sectors' which sounds like it may be a classic IB coverage team, but at the same time maybe not?
If anyone knows what this is then I'd really appreciate the input. My goal is to work in IB not CB so I would hate to pigeonhole myself into a role I am not interested in. I enjoy modelling and working hard!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, BNPP's "Coverage - Global Banking" division appears to be a hybrid role that blends elements of both corporate banking (CB) and investment banking (IB). Here's a breakdown to help you understand the nuances:

Glorified “IB” people are cool but do zero modelling.
If it’s the only option you have would still do it, easy to lateral and sell the story.
Thanks for the advice- do you know what a realistic lateral is? e.g. BNPP cov --> BNPP M&A? Is something like BNPP cov --> RBC/Nomura (GII)/Jeff feasible? FYI this is for London, so not sure whether that affects lateral opportunities.
Also not sure whether you would know, but is BNPP cov noticeably different to cov at other banks?
Cheers
Coverage at BNPP is pure commercial banking. You will do zero actual investment banking work and especially as a junior you will largely perform useless tasks such focused on KYC and cash management. No intelligent or self-respecting junior should ever aim to join this.
