You underwrite municipals bonds and sell the offerings to institutional investors. Public finance = municipal finance. Read up on “general obligation bonds” (legal obligation is full faith and credit of the issuer, generally considered safer than revenue bonds, repayment source are property tax revenues of the municipality) and “revenue bonds” (generally considered more risky than GO debt, repayment source is usually an essential revenue that municipality’s need such as water & sewer taxes).

The biggest issues in public finance right now are decreased state and federal funding for local/county municipalities, rising pressure from future pension costs, and lower revenues from decreasing property tax bases. Also, read up on “Jefferson County” and the looming muni crisis Meredith Whitney predicted last year.

jwalsh16Thanks...how bout work hours, exit ops to either HF, PE, VC or top mba ?

Not sure if an MBA program would care what group you worked in specifically. As far as getting into a school, I think the name and the division would probably be more important. The PE shops will definitely care, however. You won't have the same modeling and valuation as your peers in industry groups, but I'd take that offer in a heartbeat if I didn't have any other banking groups lined up.

I've gotten the random interviews for other groups and divisions before as well. Go with the flow and interview for those like it's your only chance, because at the end of the day you'll be kicking yourself if you slacked off and then didn't get the one you really wanted either.
