book on - rags to riches
Hey Guys,
Are there any good books on stories of successful people who climbed up the corporate ladder after growing up in humble backgrounds and how they overcame the odds? Could be a biography, or just a general analysis on their personalities, things they do, traits..
Just looking for another good book to add to my summer reading list.
50 Cent - Get rich or die tryin'
Whether you agree with his politics or not, I watched a PBS documentary on Bill Clinton last week and it was incredibly inspirational. Talk about never giving up. What a guy.
Rent "The pursuit of happyness"
yes, that's spelleddd correctly
King of Oil about Marc Rich is pretty decent.
Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss chronicles the journey of one "Sam I Am" through his trials and tribulations in convincing his grouchy roommate to try his bizzare-looking titular dish. In the end, the disgruntled roommate ultimately tries (and enjoys!) the dish. It is an amazing story of perseverance and consequential success imo.
Titan: Story of John D. Rockefeller.
Agreed. Most of the "robber barons" have pretty badass stories.
A great book is A Passion To Win by Sumner Redstone (Viacom) and True North which incorporates different CEO's of companies. A Passion To Win is written uncensored and you will read through it fast (if you like competition).
Also, Snowball about Warren Buffett is tremendous.
Try looking up John Jacob Astor. He didn't exactly come from "rags", per se; he did, however, up and move himself to a whole new country, learning their language (English) on the way, and eventually amassed a fortune of what would today be approximately US$100B. Yes, that's a B.
Huntman's book Winner's Never Cheat. Not a good book per se, but the dude grew up in a wooden shack with a dirt floor before winning a scholarship to Wharton and becoming a billionaire.

Just finished watching this video of famous chef Marco Pierre White:
I am enamoured by the life stories of people who rose to success from nothing, through sheer hard work and determination. These people who embody the idea that life owes you nothing and that it's up to you to take advantage of opportunities that come your way, if you are to be successful.
Please share any similar interviews that you're aware of.

How about GS making 200 fold profit on this investment? Amazing how they found this tiny pharmaceutical company in China.
